Luke 16:13  “No servant can serve two masters; for he will either hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and mammon.”

Some of the most dis-trusted and dis-liked people in the Bible were the tax collectors.  While their job was to collect the king’s taxes, they were free also to increase the taxes to enhance their own bank accounts.  The people knew that and they shunned tax collectors from their lives in every way they could.

What We Should Know

Ginny and I have vacationed in the Caribbean many times over the years and we really never appreciated our place in society until we became acquainted with the people of Central and South America.  Compared to them (financially) we are wealthy.  Yes, we have to struggle sometimes to make ends meet, but we haven’t gone hungry or without the essential needs in our life.  Many    people within our own community are suffering and we, as a church are blessed to be able to feed the hungry on a limited basis.  Let us never forget that as we strive to do two basic things.  First to help where we can and second, never to take our blessings for granted.
