Luke 12: 15 “And He said to them, ‘Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of things he possesses.’”

In this Parable of the Rich Fool, Jesus challenges the spirit of covetousness. In this parable, Jesus tells of the rich man who devotes his life to storage of his earthly belongings with no consideration for edifying the kingdom with his wealth. Such a person’s view of life according to verse 19 is simply “Eat, drink and be merry.” 

What We Should Know

Worldly goods are a blessing from God, and our lifetime is short when compared to eternity. While we should enjoy the fruits of our labor, we should also remain aware of the opportunity our riches provide to enhance and share the Good News of Jeus Christ to a world in need. In the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30),  Jesus gave wealth to three men just to see what they would do with it. We should always be aware of responsibility to the kingdom through stewardship as well.
