Pastor’s Note
Psalm 23
The Shepherd’s Care
There are few passages of Scripture more beloved than Psalm 23. Many of us learned it as children. We hear it at hospital bedsides, funerals, and in moments when life feels uncertain. Yet Psalm 23 is not simply a psalm for difficult days; it is a daily reminder of who God is and how deeply He cares for His people.
David begins with these simple yet profound words: "The Lord is my shepherd" (Psalm 23:1). A shepherd knows every sheep by name, leads them to places of nourishment, protects them from danger, and never abandons them. David reminds us that this is exactly how God cares for us. Because the Lord is our Shepherd, we never walk through life alone.
One of my favorite verses in Psalm 23 is, "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me" (Psalm 23:4). Notice that David does not say we avoid dark valleys. Instead, he promises that God walks with us through them. Our confidence is not found in the absence of hardship but in the presence of our Shepherd.
As we gather for worship this Sunday, I invite you to reflect on where you need the Shepherd's guidance. Perhaps you need His peace, His provision, His comfort, or His direction. Whatever you bring with you this week, know that Jesus, who is the Good Shepherd, is faithfully leading His people with love and grace.
May we rest in His care, follow His voice, and rejoice in the promise that "surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever" (Psalm 23:6).
Grace and peace,
Pastor Margaret
