I Kings 18:21 “Elijah went before the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him, but if Baal is God, follow him.’ But the people said nothing.”
Elijah was the prophet of God appointed to confront Ahab, who as king of the Israelites had sold his soul to Baal and Ashera. The people were confused and were not sure who to worship, God or Baal. Elijah took a stand and challenged Ahab’s 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Ashera to a direct confrontation on Mt. Carmel in the presence of the Israelite people as confirmation once and for all that the God of Israel is not Baal or Ashera.
What We Should Know
We, like those Israelites, are confronted daily by self-centered, “slick-tongued,” power hungry individuals who seek our support for agendas which are not Christ-centered. Elijah was truly a hero as he risked his own life in defense of the true God of Israel. While the personal agendas of all of the kings were sinful in God’s eyes, Ahab was the worst. When faced with a faith dilemma, remember the plight of Elijah and stand firm for the facts as God laid them out.
