Mark: 8:34 “Then He called the crowd to Him along with His disciples and said: ‘Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow Me.”

A young man recently came into my office very distraught and sad. He had been living in his car for the last few weeks, quit his job and, as a result, his wife left him.  As I talked with him it became very clear that his present condition was a direct result of a string of bad self-centered decisions. He had a good job as a truck driver and he became bored with his marriage and lifestyle. So, he turned to drugs which became very expensive and cost  him his job and his marriage. Thus, he found himself on the street with no where to go so he came to the church for help.

What We Should Know

The apostle Paul taught us in Philippians 2:3 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather in humility value others above yourselves.” We see a lot of selfish ambition every day with those who are trying to get ahead even at the expense of others. Life is a constant battle of motives and standards. It doesn’t take but a moment to stop and think before acting and ask yourself, “What would Jesus do?”
