Hebrews 9:27-28 “27. Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgement, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him.”
Verse 26 says “Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world.” This theme is repeated several times in Hebrews to bring home the assurance of salvation through faith not works. The writer goes on in chapter 10 to clarify Jesus’ one-time sacrifice for all.
What We should Know
Whereas the High Priest of the Old Testament sacrificed burnt offerings and sin offerings every year, those sacrifices did not take away sins. They simply fulfilled the Pharisaical laws of the time. Jesus said in John 14:6 “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” And, with that declaration, came His commitment of self sacrifice in payment of the penalties of the sins of mankind.
