Luke 23:34 “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”

Jesus had been beaten and whipped and punched and mocked. He had a crown of thorns jammed onto His head. His robe was ripped off of His bleeding back and He had to carry His instrument of death (the cross). His wrists are tied to the cross and the nails are pounded into His forearms and the spike goes through His feet. The Roman centurions disrespectfully drop the cross into its place with a painful thud.

What We Should Know

Jesus now looks down on the crowd of people and utters this first of His seven last sayings from the cross….”Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”  The “THEM” He referred to included you and me. He asked God to forgive us all of our sins, our misunderstandings, our poor judgements and bad attitudes. To deny Christ is to put Him right back on that cross again. He died once as the ultimate sacrificial lamb to pay the penalty of our sins and, when we don’t know (realize) what we are doing, He forgives us still.
