Pastor’s Note
Called to Serve
In Acts 6:1–7, the early church faced a real challenge, that is some widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. The apostles realized that while preaching and teaching were vital, meeting practical needs was just as important. So, they appointed seven faithful men to take on this ministry of service. What’s remarkable is that their willingness to serve in what seemed like a simple task, making sure everyone had food, became part of God’s greater plan. The passage ends by saying, “the word of God continued to spread; the number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly” (v. 7).
This is a powerful reminder that God calls every one of us to serve. No act of service is too small when it is done for the Lord. Whether it’s greeting someone at the door, teaching children, preparing a meal, or visiting the sick, these seemingly ordinary acts of love are woven into God’s extraordinary work of salvation. The church grows and the Gospel advances when each of us is faithful in the place where God has gifted us to serve.
That’s why I want to encourage you to discover and use the spiritual gifts God has given you. Each of us has a unique role to play in the body of Christ. To help with this, we’ve made available a Spiritual Gifts Inventory on our website found at the following URL address: https://fumc-pc.com/ministries/spiritual-gifts/. For those of you viewing this note online, you can take the Spiritual Gifts Inventory by clicking here. I’d love for you to take a few minutes this week to complete it. You may be surprised at how God has equipped you, and it could be the first step toward finding a meaningful way to get more connected and involved in the life of our church.
Let’s remember that God uses our simple acts of service to enact His supernatural plan of salvation. Together, as each of us offers what we have, we will see God move in mighty ways.
In Christ,
Pastor Margaret
