Ecclesiastes 2:18,19 “18. I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. 19. And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless.”

Solomon was wealthy beyond measure and he denied himself nothing of the pleasures of this world. Yet, through his infinite wisdom, he realized that worldly pleasures are at best only temporary. He concluded that “everything is meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.”(v.11)

What We Should Know

In Psalm 73 Asaph faced a similar dilemma. He coveted the lifestyle of those who lived without the constraints of faith and longed for a taste of their prosperity. He didn’t understand until he entered the sanctuary of God and realized there was no eternal peace in worldly pleasures. We should seek that wisdom in our own lives as we seek the true meaning of life to insure that what we pursue is meaningful and what we leave behind is our Christian heritage
